4. Cloud chasing is like a kind of sport (well, sort of)
If you are a vaper, you no doubt have heard of the term, cloud chasing; you would have heard about it at a vaping convention as well.
The vapers involved try and produce the largest, thickest plumes of vapor.
Enthusiasts have turned it into a sport, having their own competitions, not regulated competitions and neither recognized, but those who are vapers take it seriously.
Well, those are ‘did you know’ things about vaping, but let’s also take a quick look-see who invented the vape. This tale goes back in time to the 1960s.
Most people would guess that e-cigarettes were invented by tobacco companies for cigarette smokers, but this time around, the tobacco didn’t come up with the vape invention.
The vape was invented by people who were trying to stop smoking, with the aim of trying to smoke less. The first e-cigarette was invented in the USA in 1963 by Herbert Gilbert, who wanted to patent his ‘non-tobacco-smokeless cigarette’, which was granted in 1965.
His e-cigarette was free from nicotine, and in its place was a flavored vapor which was supposed to replace the smoke from tobacco.
In those days, however, there was not a whole lot of interest in the vape simply because the dangers of smoking and the health risks associated with it weren’t recognized as much, so nobody took a whole lot of notice.
But in 2001 it came up again when a pharmacist by the name of Hon Lik, a traditional Chinese medicine expert, whose father has passed away from lung cancer, and who himself was a heavy smoker, decided to quit smoking.
He started experimenting with vaporization, trying to find a replica of the feeling of inhaling tobacco smoke, eventually setting on propylene glycol. This is a common food additive. Propylene glycol is non-toxic, and along with vegetable glycerin, these became the main ingredients in e-liquid.
Vaping went on to become an e-cigarette that allows people today to use battery vapers with enough energy to allow them to ‘smoke’ an e-cigarette for some hours.
Over the years, to where we are today, Herbert Gilbert and Hon Lik are the designers of the vapes seen today, and today, there have been many other inventions that you can see when it comes to vapes.
There simply have been heaps of improvements made by hobbyists which have today become mainstream.
Some truths to know about vaping
Around 7 out of 10 smokers want to stop smoking.
Smoking is no longer cool. Not only unhealthy, but smoking in public places is banned in heaps of countries – nobody wants to breathe in cigarette smoke fumes.
Everybody knows that smoking is harmful to every part of your body and that includes your heart. Smoking might have been a cool thing to do in the past, but it no longer is.
Right now, you might be a smoker and feeling tempted to switch over to e-cigarettes.
But let’s get an expert’s opinion on the truths about vaping.
Allow Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., and the director of clinical research, Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, to share some truths about vaping.
- Is Vaping less harmful than traditional smoking?
E-cigarettes use nicotine which is extracted from tobacco, and this is heated up, together with flavorings and other chemicals. This creates a water vapor so you can inhale it.
A regular tobacco cigarette might contain 7,000 chemicals in them; e-cigarettes contain fewer chemicals in them than traditional cigarettes.
But in saying that, nicotine still remains the primary agent in cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
E-cigarettes don’t burn tobacco; they just have cartridges which are filled with nicotine and other chemicals. The liquid chemicals turn into a vapor or steam that a person inhales.
The fact of the matter is that e-cigarette smoking is still highly addictive; it still causes the desire to smoke and still causes you to suffer from withdrawal symptoms even if you ignore the craving.
Nicotine raises the blood pressure, spiking your adrenaline, which in turn increases your heart rate – that can cause a heart attack. “People should understand that e-cigarettes are potentially a danger to your health,” says Blaha.
- Electronic cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional ones
Regular cigarette smoking and e-cigarettes contain nicotine, and research suggests that it can be just as addictive as heroin and cocaine. Blaha says that a lot of e-cigarette users are probably getting more nicotine in that they might be getting from a tobacco product — because you can buy extra-strength cartridges.
Naturally, these have higher concentrations of nicotine, in them. It means you can increase the e-cigarette’s voltage to get in bigger amounts of the substance.
- Electronic cigarettes aren’t the best idea to stop smoking
Although the intention on the market is to help you to quit smoking, e-cigarettes have not received the Food and Drug Administration approval as doing just that.
In a recent study, it was found that most people whose intention it was to use e-cigarettes to kick their nicotine habit ended up just continuing to smoke their traditional cigarettes and their e-cigarettes.
- A whole new generation is becoming hooked on nicotine
Among the youth, e-cigarettes are way more popular than any of the traditional tobacco products available. A while back in 2015, the U.S. surgeon general reported back that e-cigarette use amongst high school kids had increased by 900%! He reported that 40% of young e-cigarette users had never smoked regular tobacco cigarettes!
Michael Blaha says that there are a couple of reasons why e-cigarettes seem to be particularly enticing to young people.
Firstly, teens believe that vaping isn’t as harmful to them as smoking is.
Second, e-cigarettes have a lower cost-per-use as what traditional cigarettes have.
And thirdly, vape cartridges often come formulated with tempting flavorings such as watermelon or apple pie, enticing names that sound cool and appeal to the younger users.
Adults as well as the youth like the thought that there is no smoke and with no smell, the e-cigarettes reduce that stigma that says they are real smokers.
What is really concerning about vaping is that a lot of people would not have smoked before, particularly the youth, but they are now taking up the habit of vaping.
It is one thing if you switch over from cigarette smoking to vaping, but it’s a different matter altogether if you start up your use of nicotine by vaping! Often, it leads to traditional tobacco products further down the road
During the first decade after e-cigarettes were introduced onto the international market, they were not really regulated – even young people under the age of 18 could buy e-cigarettes legally throughout much of the USA.
Most e-cigarettes still include nicotine, a toxic and addictive chemical that particularly dangerous for teenagers and the under-25-year olds whose cognitive functions aren’t yet fully mature. There is a new vaping trend called “
Read everything about ‘juuling’. Even though it is illegal to sell ‘juul’ to minors it hasn’t stopped them from getting their hands on it. Many of the kids say ‘juuling’ makes them ‘feel good’. Know if your child is
- Unexplained sweet scent from the scented vapors.
- Strange ‘USB drivers’ and ‘pens’ that are actually vaping devices
- Not showing interest in caffeine like their coffee like they used to.
- Increased thirst from dehydration – maybe dark circles under their eyes.
- More nosebleeds due to nostrils becoming dried.
- Bloody sores in their mouth and/or smoker’s cough.

What is vaping made of?
The vaporizer is an electric device that turns the vaping materials into vapor for you to smoke. The vaporizer usually consists of a battery, the main housing or console, an atomizer or cartomizer, and cartridges. The power for the vaporizer comes from a battery that heats the element in the atomizer. This heating contacts the vaping materials transforming it into vapor for inhalation.
- Materials for vaping
Most vapers use e-liquids. There are other common materials which include waxy concentrates and dry herbs. Basically, different vaporizers, different materials. E-liquids for example use vaporizers that have a tank or a cartridge. The dry herb vaporizer will use a heating chamber. You get multi-purpose vaporizers which allow you to vape various materials – all you do is switch cartridges.
- The vapor in the vaporizer
The vapor used in the vaporizer can be defined as a substance that is diffused or suspended in the air. This is generally a solid or a liquid that is turned into a gaseous form. The vapor actually looks thicker than smoke, but it smells much better and kind of dissipates quickly into the air.
- E-juice and e-liquids
E-juice and e-liquid are the same things – the primary material used in vaporizers. It consists of propylene glycol or PG and vegetable glycerin or VG, flavorings. Some will or won’t contain nicotine. You get heaps of varieties of e-liquids on the market today, and flavor range from fruity to tasting like desserts, or candies, and so forth. Some stores allow you to mix and match your flavors; to build what you like.
- Starter kits for beginners
The world of vaping is certainly open to beginners because the starter kits introduce all the basic stuff about the devices, such as tanks, mods, and coils. The kits will contain stuff like replacement parts, chargers, and tools. The starter kits are usually for e-juice vaping.
They just require assembly, cleaning and maintenance; that’s it. Beginners will learn about the different types of vape settings such as temperature and wattage control. If you have recently switched over from smoking cigarettes, vaping offers a sensation almost similar to smoking a traditional cigarette. It has low strength nicotine and moderate throat hits can make them a viable option for novices.
- Vape mods
These are supposedly the real deal, offering the extreme vaping experiences – ideal for those with a bit of vaping experience. You get mods, prices from around $30 to $300 and higher – the mods allow you to vape all kinds of material including e-liquids, wax concentrates and dry herbs.
You get mods that are hybrids, which allow you to vape a variety of materials – all you do is swap the cartridges. Even though the vape mod sets you back a penny or two, after you buy it, you then just need to buy the e-liquids, making it a bit more economical than smoking cigarettes. Just buy your mod from well known, reliable brands.
- Dab Wax Pens
Dab pens are for those who want to vape wax and oil concentrates. All you do is use the easy one-button controls or have liquid crystal displays for adjustable features. The Dab Pens are small with built-in batteries, using a heating element to vape extracts.
The flavor you look for will be determined by the e-liquid you use. Choose your juices carefully because they can either make or break your vaping experience, particularly if you are a beginner.
Then it is advised that you choose well-known brands because the low-quality e-juices can contain harmful contaminants even unlisted ingredients. Here are some organizations who are ‘for’ and ‘against’ vaping:
Those who don’t object to vaping
- Public Health England says that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking.
- The American Heart Association’s say that vaporizers are less dangerous than cigarettes and that vaping can even help people to quit smoking.
- The Royal College of Physicians says that vaping is the first genuine way of helping people to quit smoking.
- The Spanish Council of Scientific Research says that the amounts of volatile organic compounds that are found in exhaled vapors are less than both exhaled smoke and normal breath.
Those who object to vaping
- The World Health Organization reports that vaping could well become the gateway for teens and young adults to the world of smoking.
- A study from the American Association for the Advancement of Science says that vaping has just about the same impact as cigarettes in terms of suppressing the essential immune system-related genes.
To close off with, here are just a couple of things you should do to ensure your safety as well as others around you when it comes to vape:
- If you are not a smoker now, then don’t start to vape. We know that nicotine is a serious drug, highly addictive, which can lead to all kinds of health problems on its own. It is not worth taking on addiction for the sake of vaping.
- If you must vape, choose the best vaping gear from the best manufacturers. Remember, low-quality vaporizers can pose risks and threats to your health that might not even be related directly to vaping.
- It is best that you don’t vape in places where smoking is prohibited.
- If you do want a healthier lifestyle, eliminate the nicotine from your e-liquids. Most manufacturers allow you to choose your nicotine strengths, which make it easy to cut down on your intake. Then you can eventually vape e-liquids with 0% nicotine.
- Always use child-proof bottles for your e-juices, keeping them out of the reach of pets and children. Should an e-liquid contain nicotine, it can be poisonous if ingested.
- Keep batteries safe, particularly if you use the 18650 vape ones. Only use a charger that is recommended by the manufacturer, and don’t overcharge or over-discharge the batteries. Store the batteries which you are not using in a safe place preferably a plastic case. Don’t carry loose batteries in your pocket.
- Don’t try and build your own mods. Wait till you are familiar with how a vape mod works.
Got a better understanding of all the things you need to know about vaping? Just remember that no matter what benefits that vaping has over smoking, the risks remain uncertain still.
Remember that most liquids do contain nicotine, which is a habit-forming substance – it can be poisonous if ingested. No one can yet claim that vaping is totally harmless even though it lacks certain harmful ingredients that are present in normal cigarettes.
